About: Vision
The American Victory will
immerse visitors in a unique, state-of-the-art seafaring
experience the moment they step aboard. They will be
whisked back to an era when life was simpler, when
romance was pure, and young people had heroes.
Volunteers serving as crewmembers with authentic period
uniforms will greet visitors as moving “Victory At Sea”
music plays throughout the vessel. In the Victory
Theater, sitting on benches crafted from ship hatch
boards, visitors will view a video presentation setting
the stage for the shipboard experience. Volunteer crew
members, many of whom served aboard the SS American
Victory and others like her, will answer questions and
share anecdotes about life at sea on Victory and other
merchant ships as they escort visitors on tours of the
vessel.
The goals of the
American Victory Mariner’s Memorial and Museum Ship are
to:
-
Provide a first-class, interactive maritime
educational experience for visitors of all ages,
from schoolchildren to senior citizens.
-
Create a world-class museum describing life aboard
Victory and other merchant ships during World War II
and the Korean War and Vietnam War. The museum will
feature artifacts, and interactive and multi-media
exhibits depicting life at sea and the role of Tampa
Bay in worldwide waterborne commerce
-
Memorialize all mariners, with a focus on Merchant
Mariners and the U.S. Navy Armed Guard crews who
lost their lives sailing and defending Victory and
other merchant ships.
-
Serve as a training vessel for Tampa Bay area
maritime industry workforce.
-
Serve as a state-of-the-art conference center for
meetings, reunions, receptions, seminars and similar
special event functions.
-
Provide a unique venue for upscale dining and
entertainment.
This maritime educational
experience will present the important role played by U.
S. Merchant Mariners who served aboard cargo ships
during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War and in
the development of waterborne commerce from the
mid-1940’s onward. The experience will also describe the
historical and economic significance of the maritime
industry to the Tampa Bay area.
