EDUCATION PROGRAMS PROVIDE ‘HANDS-ON HISTORY’ FOR STUDENTS OF ALL AGES

The American Victory’s Education Program launches its fifth year.  These unique programs bring history to life in an unequaled fashion aboard an authentic, working World War II-era cargo vessel and enhance elementary, middle or high school students’ knowledge of American and world history and social studies themes.

Themes that can be presented include Florida and Tampa Bay maritime history, local geographical, economic and cultural issues that have made the region and state important players in global economics, Cold War era political, economic and social conditions that shaped modern-day America and the critical role played by women, minorities and other groups on the home front during World War II.

Program content coincides with Florida Sunshine State Standards for social studies curricula and can be tailored to fit lesson plans.  Pre- and post-visit material is available to plan for and reinforce a positive shipboard experience.  Program details are available by using the ‘Education’ link above, or by calling (813) 228-8766.

FEEL THE STEEL!

The popular American Victory tours allow visitors to view first hand the on-going work to restore this icon of America's merchant maritime might.  Travel ‘back in time’ aboard a functioning, 1940s era merchant cargo vessel which served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Visitors experience virtually the entire ship, including cavernous three-level cargo holds, radio and gyro rooms, hospital, galley, weaponry, reefers, steering stations, flying bridge, signaling equipment, wheelhouse, officer and crew messes, engine room, crew cabins, chartroom, lifeboats and cargo equipment.  Closed circuit television hookups allow a view of engine room, four decks below.

The developing museum contains photographs of the American Victory and other merchant ships of the period, U.S. Merchant Marine uniforms, medals and documents, personal recollections of life at sea as well as navigational artifacts, equipment, ship models and weaponry.

Self Guided Restoration Tours
Self-Guided Restoration Tours are available Tuesday - Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM and Sundays, 12 N - 4 PM.  Visitors starting tours before 4 PM may remain aboard until 5 PM.  Tour are $8 adults, $4 for children 4-12; kids 3 and under are free.  Discounts are available for seniors, veterans, active duty military, visitors holding Florida Aquarium ticket stubs and groups of 10 or more.
S.S. American Victory is looking for you - Key Volunteer Positions Needed

Are you bored, had wonderful life experiences, enjoy working with people, and would like to share with us, the American Victory is the answer.

The S.S. American Victory is a working maritime museum located on the waterfront at the Florida Aquarium in the heart of the channelside entertainment district of Tampa.  The American Victory currently is expanding its Explore A Ship concept and exhibits and has volunteer openings for Event Planner, Volunteer Coordinator, Cruise Director(s), and Education Specialist.

If you want a rewarding experience that will build on your life experiences the American Victory is for you.

Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteers are the life blood of the AMERICAN VICTORY.  We need a dynamic leader to help recruit, organize, train, and recognize these dedicated individuals.  The volunteer coordinator acts as the initial point of contact for new volunteers, maintains volunteer records, and facilitates communications and coordination of the volunteers aboard the AMERICAN VICTORY.

Volunteer Cruise Director
The American Victory conducts two historic cruises each year, spring and fall.  The American Victory is looking for one or two cruise directors, (depending on ones available time) to work with the ship's museum administration and museum Board of Directors in directing, coordinating with the ships cadre of volunteers along with outside agencies to plan, and execute an underway cruise.  If this sounds interesting the American Victory wants you.

Volunteer Event Planner
Do you enjoy life and would like to expand your life experiences, the American Victory is looking for you.  The American Victory is looking for imaginative volunteer that likes to party.  This position involves planning a number of pier side events that would enhance the public maritime learning experience and financial support the American Victory.  Some examples of events in the works are, Maritime Art Exhibit, Tugboat cook off, antique car show, M.A.S.H. Night, just to name a few.  If this is of interest to you, the American Victory wants you.

Volunteer Education Specialist
The American Victory is currently implementing an Explore A Ship concept that will consist of hands on exhibits that will provide an educational background and under the "Florida Sunshine Standards" the American Victory is looking for you.  The American Victory is a wonderful maritime ship with five cargo holds available for museum exhibits.
