Get Involved: Volunteer

As a not-for-profit organization, the American Victory relies heavily on its “crew” of volunteers. Literally dozens of opportunities exist to participate in very meaningful ways in several different areas. These have been organized into categories and are listed below.

Administrative & Public Relations

Operating the AVMM&MS and the SS American Victory will require an effective and efficient administrative and public relations staff to handle telephone inquires, assist office visitors, provide data base management support, manage volunteer efforts and a myriad of other duties involved with operating a museum and maritime attraction.

Special Events

Volunteers are needed to assist in handling large groups of visitors and to assist visitors with special needs. Event planning and coordination skills are needed. Event managers, to ticket takers are needed for every event the American Victory hosts.

Education Programs

Use your passion for history and public speaking abilities aboard the American Victory. Conduct student and adult tours as scheduled. Training will be provided. As a tour guide you will be given the opportunity to work with all age groups aboard a historic World War II Merchant Marine cargo vessel. The volunteer will have the opportunity to research, create, and lead his/her own tour as well as work closely with the Educator to implement special events and other educational programs.

Museum & Ship's Store

One important component of the SS American Victory will be the onboard maritime museum, with displays of seafaring artifacts, interactive and hands-on displays and other exhibits. To help staff the museum and to create a positive experience, volunteers are needed in the following areas:

The ship’s store will also be an integral part of the museum. It will provide visitors with an opportunity to purchase educational and historical material, high-quality reproductions of clothing and other memorabilia from eras during which the SS American Victory sailed as well as other seafaring-related items. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Ship's Maintenance

Just like any other ship afloat, the weather and the sea will affect the SS American Victory. Keeping her in shipshape condition will require continuous maintenance and will be one of our top priorities. Opportunities to participate in maintenance operations include the following:

Ship's Crew

One of the goals of the AVMM&MS is to staff the SS American Victory with a complement of mariners to match as closely as possible the crew that she carried during World War II. Though we will need individuals with expired licenses to fill non-required crew billets, mariners with current United States Coast Guard licenses and ratings are especially encouraged to volunteer. Licensed or non-licensed mariners are needed in the following areas:

Restoration Volunteers

While in remarkable structural shape for a 60-year old vessel, the SS American Victory is in great need of cosmetic restoration in virtually every area of the ship. She also needs operating system upgrades and conversion into a museum and memorial. To help return her to her former glory, the AVMM&MS needs individuals with the following skills:
